Souvenir Card - Give the Crank a Little Twist

Produced by:
Christian’s Arts & Crafts
Production Year:
c. 1950s
Medium:
Offset lithograph postcard with applied hand-painted rubber hula figure and metal crank mechanism
Produced in Honolulu during the height of postwar island tourism, this mechanical postcard exemplifies the inventive novelty souvenirs of the 1950s. A small metal crank animates a sculptural hula dancer affixed to the card’s surface, transforming a conventional printed image into an interactive object.
Behind the dimensional rubber figure, a vividly colored garden scene of hula performers unfolds beneath dense tropical foliage, reinforcing the era’s idealized vision of Hawai‘i.
Blurring the boundary between printed ephemera and kinetic keepsake, the piece reflects both the ingenuity of mid-century craft production and the romanticized imagery that shaped the visual culture of Hawaiian travel.
The front of the card reads:“Give the crank a little twist and you will like it, we insist.”
The reverse bears a handwritten travel note:“This is the life! We are enjoying every minute of our 10-day trip here. Have had Hawaiian dinners, Chinese, Italian, Norwegian & French. Had wonderful trip already for 3 weeks. Will show you our slides when we get back. Love, Jim and Adeh”
