A handcrafted diorama featuring two pink flamingos standing among faux coral and natural seashells, framed by a real conch shell.
Conch shell lamps and souvenir dioramas like the ones pictured emerged in popularity in the 1950s–1970s, especially across coastal tourist destinations in Florida, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and the Gulf Coast. These handcrafted items were often sold in seaside gift shops as kitschy mementos that captured the tropical allure of a beach vacation.
The use of natural materials like conch shells, coral, and sea snails was paired with colorful resin bases and miniature plastic figurines—such as flamingos, palm trees, dolphins, and hula dancers—to create whimsical table décor. Some versions included working lamps with bulbs tucked inside the shells, casting a soft glow through the pearlescent interior.
