Vacuform plastic with painted details
With glowing yellow cracks splitting her green skin and a jagged black mane, this witch mask brought cartoonish menace to trick-or-treating kids everywhere. Vacuform plastic masks like this one dominated drugstore Halloween aisles throughout the 1970s and '80s, cheap, lightweight, and instantly recognizable. Fun World built a costume empire on exactly this kind of mass-produced spookiness, turning garish paint jobs and molded plastic into a rite of childhood Halloween passage.
